The Batfish Living History Association (BLHA) was founded in 2007 with a specific mission.
Preserve, Train, Teach. This has been our mission statement since day one.
Preserve: We seek to preserve the memories of the crew as well as the boat itself.
Train: We train ourselves and each other. We train as a crew, learning the ship as though we were going to sea. This better enables us to preserve the boat while better enabling us to teach.
Teach: We take what we learn and teach the next generation. We pass along the oral histories of the original crew as well as the history of the boat.
We train as a crew. We were convinced that we may never actually use half of our training until May of 2019 when the Batfish, overrun with local flooding, began to flood internally. Our Damage Control Team minimized the damage to the boat and oversaw operations to ensure that she wouldn't be lost to the flood.
In the words of one submarine veteran "I'm proud to call you all brothers. Pride runs deep!!!"
Who are we?
While not a requirement in our bylaws, 100% of the current leadership of the Batfish Living History Association is comprised of prior service veterans from all branches. Our crew comes from all walks of life. We have teachers, law enforcement officers, paramedics, historians, mechanics, engineers, students, Eagle Scouts, electricians, government employees, and just about every job in between.
